EDUCATING IS REDEEMING (II)–CDMX
Every educational project can operate as a tool at the service of the State to entrench its ideological contours. Educating is Redeeming Scale 1:1 addresses the mechanics of pedagogy in Mexico during the first decades of the 20th century, establishing, in turn, a reflection on its impact on public space and on the visual monumentality of the muralist movement.
Its title refers to the motto that appears on a sculptural group located in front of the Centro Escolar Revolución in Mexico City, the first Mexican public school built for the co-education of boys and girls. Miguel Benjumea directs our attention to this space, which housed the former Belén prison and continues to operate today as a school and a symbol of revolutionary principles. Inside the school, the mural *Attack on Rural Teachers* (1936) by the artist Aurora Reyes illustrates a scene of violence perpetrated against female teachers. To create this work, the image of the original sketch is recovered and fragmented into 150 photocopies, which comprise the artist's book and allow the mural to be reproduced and displayed at a 1:1 scale.
The book can only be read through its assembly, through the reproducibility of the photocopy and its spatial integration. A portable piece that invites the deconstruction of a plastic strategy that acts as an ideological instrument and questions the homogenizing logic of any educational system.
