DE FACTO. ATLAS OF UNRECOGNIZED COUNTRIES
Regions are countries insofar as they possess the three elements required by international law: territory, population, and self-government. An "unrecognized state" or "state with limited recognition" is a territory whose sovereignty is not internationally recognized, despite being administered partially or fully by a potentially autonomous body.
This series, "Atlas of Unrecognized States," compiles unrecognized states in a diptych format. We appropriate images from the internet, which are then digitally manipulated (the first image that appears in the Google search results when the country's name is typed in is selected). Consequently, this project aims to delve into how the boundaries of territory linked to politics become blurred.
