ANTIPODES
In Geography, antipode (from the Greek anti: “opposite” and pous, podós: “foot, of the foot”), is the place on the Earth's surface diametrically opposite to another side of a particular position; that is, the place on the Earth's surface farthest away.
Experiencing the landscape from the network means taking a step back, and therefore, photographic devices help to transfer –in terms of time and space– this bodily experience.
What do we do when the landscape reveals more information than we can gather? This has undoubtedly been a question posed to us since the last century. Today, thanks to the internet, the challenge is to place the viewer in this same situation and, like a mirror, confront them with the landscape, so they can observe and reflect within undefined limits and parameters.
In this sense, the fragment of the landscape we observe thanks to Google Maps is a relic of what remains of that experience. The information provided by the landscape and mediated by the formal limitations of photography is, in Antipodes, the trigger that initiates a conceptual discourse, which serves as a model for reconfiguring three-dimensional forms of opposing territories.
This site-specific project, created for this occasion, aims to initiate a process of reconstruction—based on the relationship between landscapes previously captured by digital media. We play with the exact location of the NH Hotel in Santiago de Compostela to engage in a dialogue with the point diametrically opposite to our location, New Zealand, and thus, within these margins of representation, expand the perception of a new territory.
Antipodes implies the notion of the Earth's sphericity, from the moment its orientation model is imposed, taking shape from the hypothesis of a journey, a virtual displacement and a physical experience, which begins among all those spectators who enter the room of the NH Santiago de Compostela Hotel and live with a series of devices such as terrestrial photographs, computer codes, orientation and latitude, slide projections, and a documentary record of a series of letters sent to the nearest Hotel of the exact antipode of our location in Spain.
